Fish Stocking Calculator

Estimate a practical starting stocking plan based on pond surface acreage. Choose a balanced recreational pond profile or use a regional starting point, then adjust with a fisheries professional when existing fish populations or special management goals are involved.

1. Pond Size

Enter your known surface acreage, or estimate acreage from simple pond dimensions.

Uses length × width ÷ 43,560. For irregular ponds, this is only an approximation.

Uses π × radius² ÷ 43,560.

2. Stocking Profile

Profiles are starting points for new or renovated ponds with little or no existing fish population.

Your Suggested Starting Plan

Balanced Recreational Pond
Species Suggested Size Rate / Acre Your Pond Timing Purpose / Note
New ponds only This calculator is designed primarily for new or renovated ponds. Established ponds should be assessed before adding more fish.
Stock forage before predators Where forage fish are part of the plan, allow them time to establish before or while predator populations are being introduced.
Local conditions matter Soil fertility, water quality, habitat, fishing pressure, feeding, climate and management goals can change appropriate stocking rates.
Important: This calculator provides a starting estimate, not a prescription. Do not use it to restock an established pond without first understanding the existing fish population. Crappie, walleye, hybrid sunfish and other specialty species require more specific management decisions and are intentionally not included in the default balanced-pond plans.
Basis for the starting profiles: Iowa Department of Natural Resources pond stocking guidance and publicly available Harrison Fishery stocking recommendations. Rates are presented as general planning guidance and should be adjusted for regional conditions and pond objectives.
